  • Families Encouraged to Return Income Information for School Meal Programs

While all students may be provided meals at no charge to them during school year 2021–2022, it is critical that eligible families complete the family income information this fall. This press release is shared with our Riverview families, courtesy of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and Riverview's Food Services team. For more information, please contact Robin Budig, Riverview's Food Services Program Assistant, via email at budigr@rsd407.org. To access Free and Reduced Meal Applications and more information on the Free and Reduced Meal program, please click below: https://www.rsd407.org/free-and-reduced-price-meals Many students across Washington state rely on school meals to meet their nutritional needs. As the economic impacts of COVID-19 continue, more students are eligible to receive meals at no charge to their families. School district operations may vary across the state due to flexibilities allowed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Families should contact their local school district to find out how meals are being offered. While districts are able to provide meals at no charge to all enrolled students through the end of school year 21–22 families are strongly encouraged to complete meal applications or family income surveys. Information collected in school meal applications and family income surveys help students access district or community reduced fee benefits. In addition, the information may be used to qualify eligible children for SY 21–22 and summer 2022 P-EBT if programs are extended. Completing these forms is simple and confidential. There are no citizenship requirements for participation in federal Child Nutrition Programs, and immigration status is not requested or disclosed. Information obtained from family income forms is used to determine student eligibility for several school programs. In addition, the information can help increase funding for before and after school academic programs, guidance and college counselors, fee waivers for college applications and admissions tests, as well has help provide healthy and nutritious meals. All households with students in grades K–12 receive application packets at the beginning of the school year. The application packet provides instructions and directions on where to send the materials. In addition, many schools make meal applications available electronically. Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications are reviewed, and determinations are made within 10 operating days of receipt of the application. Households denied eligibility can appeal the decision by contacting their school. Meal applications can be submitted any time during the school year. Households that experience a change in income due to job loss or other circumstances are encouraged to apply. Eligibility Students receiving help through Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/Basic Food Program – as well as all other students in the same household – automatically qualify for free meals. Children participating in specific Medicaid programs may also qualify for free or reduced-price meals. The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) provides the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) with a list of children who receive these services to facilitate automatic eligibility. Households notified of their children’s eligibility must contact the school if the household chooses to decline the free meal benefits. Children placed in foster care are eligible for free meal benefits and are also included in the list provided to OSPI. In foster households, all other students in the household may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals based on household size and income. In these situations, households may submit an application. Students experiencing homelessness, students enrolled in Migrant Education Programs, households taking part in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, and students in Head Start and Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program are eligible for free meals. Families should contact their child’s school for more information. Eligibility lasts from the date of approval up to the first 30 operating days of the next school year or until a family contacts the school or district. Households needing assistance with applications materials in languages other than English should contact their school for assistance. The income eligibility guidelines listed below are used to determine the eligibility of children to receive free or reduced-price meals or free milk. Washington state legislation pays the cost of breakfast and lunch for public school students eligible for reduced-price meals in grades pre-K‒12 . USDA Child Nutrition Program Income Guidelines The following income guidelines for eligibility for free meals and reduced-price meals apply from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022. Free Meals Reduced-Price Meals If you have questions about eligibility, please contact your child’s school. Schools with more than 25% of the enrolled K–4 students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals are required to operate the National School Lunch Program. In addition, schools with more than 40% of enrolled students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals are required to operate the School Breakfast Program. • 2021 Tolt Dam Evacuation Drill Information

Each year, the Riverview School District conducts a full-scale or partial-scale drill involving our Carnation-based schools, transportation, maintenance, and district office staff and administration. The Tolt Dam Evacuation Drill simulates the procedures in place to evacuate students and staff safely on an evacuation route in Carnation, if the Tolt Dam sends a failure alert. This year, the Tolt Dam Evacuation Drill is a full-scale drill and takes place on September 29, 2021. • Tolt Middle School to Change Mascot; Riverview Learning Center to Change Logo

Based on the passage of House Bill 1356 (HB 1356), and its effective date of July 25, 2021, Tolt Middle School will be required to change the “Thunderbird” name, logo, and any images associated with the likeness of the Thunderbird. The Riverview Learning Center will need to change a Northwest Coast Indian-inspired logo depicting a raven, though the school will remain connected to the “Ravens” name. Specifically, HB 1356 states, “Except as provided otherwise in this section, beginning January 1, 2022, public schools may not use Native American names, symbols, or images as school mascots, logos, or team names.” Tolt Middle School administration will be working with staff and students to come up with a new animal-based name going forward. A committee that includes students, parents, and staff members will be responsible for leading the process. For the Riverview Learning Center, it is much simpler. The raven will continue to be the animal-based name, symbol, and image. The existing logo, inspired by the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska and British Columbia, will be removed from use. Riverview Superintendent Dr. Anthony Smith stated: “We are proud of Tolt Middle School’s past and how the Thunderbird symbol has been used to represent the school’s pride, spirit, and inclusive history. Riverview is proud of its positive relationship with our local Snoqualmie Indian Tribe, and I look forward to supporting the process at Tolt for selecting a new animal name, logo, and mascot. Our next image will continue to evoke school spirit, pride, and inclusiveness.” To see the entire HB 1356, please click below: http://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2021-22/Pdf/Bills/Session%20Laws/House/1356-S.SL.pdf?q=20210923095009

  • Updates from Riverview School District - September 22, 2021

Dear Riverview Community: The purpose of this communication is to provide updates regarding a great beginning to the school year, updates and information regarding COVID-19 in our district and community, details on volunteers, and a note about the upcoming Tolt Dam Evacuation Drill. A GREAT BEGINNING TO THE SCHOOL YEAR We wanted to take a moment to express just how excited we are to have students back full-time in person and in our classrooms. This has been a long journey to get to this point. As we complete our first month of the school year, 98% of our enrolled students are back in-person, with 2% of our students opting for virtual learning program offerings through the Puget Sound Online Learning Cooperative and the Edgenuity platform. A huge thank you to everyone who has worked hard and has come together to make the return to school so successful. Our students are thriving. COVID-19 UPDATES AND INFORMATION The Riverview School District continues to follow state and local guidance and works diligently to ensure our students and staff are safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since schools were first closed to in-person instruction on March 13, 2020, and through the phased-in return to learning and the eventual full-time return to in-person learning earlier this month, Riverview has had 52 total cases of COVID-19 reported among students and staff. Of those 52 cases, 9 positive cases have been diagnosed this school year. This accounts for 1.5% of our school population being diagnosed with a positive case of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Working directly with Public Health – Seattle King County (PHSKC), our nursing team has been successful in determining close contacts and working through the contact tracing process whenever a potential new case is reported. Beginning this school year, we have added a district-wide COVID-19 Dashboard on the Engage – Riverview 407 website (engage.rsd407.org). Because of the small size of our community and the right to privacy for students and families receiving a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, the dashboard provides an overall case count district-wide, both within the previous seven days and since September 1, 2021 (the first day of the school year). Families who may be impacted by a potential positive COVID-19 case or exposure are contacted directly and communication is maintained between our nursing team and the student and family involved. Recently, PHSKC provided an updated Return to Work/School Flow Chart, specifying when or when not to come to school if someone is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Should a student show signs of symptoms listed in the updated Flow Chart, families should contact their school nurse and they will guide students and families through the next steps. Above all else, staying in contact with your school and school nurse is always the best decision when it comes to matters like these. Volunteers for classrooms and other indoor activities will be allowed beginning Monday, October 4, 2021. If you are interested in volunteering in Riverview, you will need to gain approval from the classroom teacher and building administrator. September 1, 2021 WHAT’S NEW IN RIVERVIEW? SCHOOL IS BACK! Dear Riverview Community, Welcome back! We had a great first day of school. Our Central Office Team was able to visit schools, classrooms, and programs at every school and everything went smoothly, with tremendous excitement to resume full day school, onsite. It was so nice to visit with our students, staff, teachers, as well as a number of parents during the Kindergarten Soft Start Transition Program. Thanks to so many for making this such a successful start, including our PTSAs, parent volunteers, businesses and community organizations. I am looking forward to resuming so many of the activities, athletics, and events we have enjoyed over the years, such as middle school sports, career and technical education events, community service activities, and the visual and performing arts. We will continue to follow state and county guidance and implement health and safety protocols through our school safety and health plans. We have 1.7% of our students participating in our new K-8 Edgenuity Virtual Program through Puget Sound Educational Service District, to keep as many students as possible engaged and enrolled as Riverview students. We are currently setting up additional support systems for the K-8 virtual program and are looking forward to celebrating the first day of school for that program and most of our Riverview Learning Center programs on Tuesday, September 7. • Updates from Riverview's Transportation Team - August 31, 2021

The Riverview School District Transportation team has the following information to share with Riverview students and families prior to the beginning of the school year. BUS ROUTES Bus routes and bus information is available on the new Riverview School District website for the start of the 2021-2022 school year. https://www.rsd407.org/transportation Information on bus assignments and routes listed in Skyward is not accurate. To receive the most current information, please visit the Transportation page on the district website (linked above) or contact the Transportation Office, during normal business hours, at (425) 844-4540. Please note that our Transportation team receives a high volume of calls at the beginning of each school year and our office staff, including the Transportation Supervisor, may be unavailable as they are driving bus routes. Messages may be left and will be returned at the earliest opportunity. THERE MAY BE DELAYS THE FIRST FEW DAYS With major construction efforts impacting some routes, as well as students riding buses for the first time, or riding them all over again, there may be small delays in the drop-off and pick-up of students during the first few days of school. BUS PASSES For approximately the first month of the school year, the general distribution of bus passes will be suspended. This is necessary because of an increase in student enrollment and increased numbers of riders on our student buses. Many of our buses will be near or at capacity during the first few days of school. The temporary elimination of bus passes will allow Transportation team members to better determine which routes will be consistently near or at capacity, while also providing a ride to all students in need of transportation. An update on bus passes will be forthcoming. Sincerely, Sabrina Warren Transportation Supervisor Riverview School District

In this update, we share links to the new bus routes for the 2021-2022 school year, updates and additional information (including an updated FAQ) on Edgenuity and the Puget Sound Online Learning Cooperative virtual learning program, a link to September menus, and more. 2021-2022 BUS ROUTES NOW AVAILABLE FROM OUR TRANSPORTATION TEAM! The Riverview School District is happy to share new bus routes with our Riverview Community, as well as a note from our amazing Transportation Team! If you have any questions regarding bus routes and how they relate to your drop-off or pick-up needs, please contact our Transportation Department at (425) 844-4540. The Riverview Bus Drivers are excited for our drivers to return and drive our amazing students for the 2021-2022 school year! Please select the tab (or link) for your student’s school to see up-to-date bus routes for the new school year. Each year, and especially during the first few weeks of a new school year, bus routes can change. The inbound and outbound routes can be in a different order than the past. Pick-up and drop-off times may also change, so it is best to not rely on previous year's bus schedules. Bus numbers can also change, with some students needing two different buses, or riding a transfer bus. Most elementary buses will have a color assigned to their route. A placard with your bus’s color is located by the entrance door of the bus to help your child find their bus home. If you have any questions regarding these routes, or any routes posted on the district website, please contact the Transportation Department Offices at (425) 844-4540. Thank you! Riverview School District Transportation To access the new bus routes, please click the link below: https://www.rsd407.org/transportation PUGET SOUND ONLINE LEARNING COOPERATIVE/EDGENUITY UPDATES We have gained additional information on the grade K-8 virtual learning option we are offering as part of the Puget Sound Educational Service District Online Learning Cooperative. Please read through the information below and visit our "PSESD K-8 Virtual" tab on the FAQ page of our Engage - Riverview 407 website to determine if this is a good option for your child(ren) and family. Please note: The registration deadline is by the end of day on Tuesday, August 31. Curriculum is self-paced at the grade level of the student. Riverview students participating in our Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) programs including this virtual program, will begin their online coursework on Tuesday, September 7. Course beginning and ending dates are aligned to the RSD school calendar. The program requires an adult guide (Edgenuity uses the term “Learning Coach”) to support the student through the online curriculum. This is especially important for elementary students. Students in grades K-5 will be registered into English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health and Art for the first semester. Students in grades 6-8 will be registered into English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health and Digital Citizenship for the first semester. With the virtual option, Special Education services will be provided by the home school. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team will convene to determine details and methods of delivery to meet a student’s IEP goals. Once registered, students/families will receive an email from the Edgenuity teacher with teacher contact information, links to the curriculum, and additional information for the courses for the semester. The Edgenuity teacher will contact students during the week of August 30. If you register and have not been contacted by the end of the day on September 2, please contact us at rsdtl@rsd407.org To register, please complete this form. Registration will close on the end of day on Tuesday, August 31. SEPTEMBER 2021 SCHOOL MENUS This year, the Riverview School District is again able to provide free meals for all in-person students in grades K-12 for the duration of the 2021-2022 school year. SHPs are available for public viewing by individual request.

  • Updates from Riverview School District - August 20, 2021

August 20, 2021 Dear Riverview Community: The purpose of this communication is to provide updates to our Riverview Community as we move closer to the return of full-time, in-person learning and the first day of school on September 1, 2021. RIVERVIEW ENTERS INTO PUGET SOUND ONLINE LEARNING COOPERATIVE The Riverview School District will provide a virtual learning option for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The school district already has a virtual option for high school students called CLEAR (Cyber Learning Educational Alternative at Riverview). To access CLEAR, please contact the Riverview Learning Center (RLC), via phone at (425) 844-4960, or by emailing RLC Secretary Kris Rodger (rodgerk@rsd407.org). Given the recent rise in COVID-19 Delta variant cases, some parents have contacted us seeking a home-based/virtual learning alternative. As a response to these inquiries, we have contracted with the Puget Sound Online Learning Cooperative to provide a virtual learning option. Riverview will be a participant in this new online learning cooperative, organized by the Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD), for the 2021-2022 school year. The Cooperative, using the Edgenuity learning platform, will allow students to work at their own pace from home, with guidance from a parent or guardian. Students will stay enrolled in Riverview, while learning through the Edgenuity program. The district will provide educational supports for students who qualify for special programs outside of general education. Key elements of the Edgenuity platform includes: Primarily asynchronous learning. Learning support provided by parent/guardian (defined by Edgenuity as a “Learning Coach”). Workbooks will be available for grades K-5. All materials for grades 6-8 are provided online through the Edgenuity platform. Suggested schedules and pacing guides provided by Edgenuity. Edgenuity teachers are available for office hours, tutoring, and one-to-one support. Moving forward, we will be sharing details on the registration process next week as the Collaborative finalizes details with Edgenuity. We are excited to have this opportunity to continue to provide a virtual learning option for families during the 2021-2022 school year. If you have interest in the Puget Sound Online Learning Cooperative and plan to register for this virtual learning opportunity, please contact our Teaching and Learning Department, via email, at rsdtl@rsd407.org. UPDATE ON STATE VACCINATIONS AND OTHER MITIGATING FACTORS Vaccinations On August 18, 2021, Governor Jay Inslee announced a new directive legally requiring all K-12 school district employees to get a COVID-19 vaccination or a medical or religious exemption by October 18, 2021. This proclamation does not apply to students. The COVID-19 vaccine is not required for students at this time. The proclamation also does not replace the requirement for all staff and students to wear masks or face coverings in school and on school buses. Please note that this announcement will not delay our return to school buildings this fall. Our first day of school is Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Some of the key elements of the Governor's Proclamation are outlined below: Riverview School District and our local School Board do not have control over this decision. We are legally required to follow the Governor’s directive. Employees may obtain a medical or religious exemption, if they qualify. There is not an option to undergo regular testing for COVID-19 instead of receiving a vaccination or exemption. Employees will need to provide proof of vaccination. Attestation is not an allowable substitute for vaccination. Vaccination is a condition of employment in the proclamation. Only a medical or religious exemption will substitute for the vaccine requirement. Again, this proclamation does not include requiring vaccines for students. We are sharing this information, so families understand some of the health and safety requirements that are in place for the 2021-22 school year. Masking Requirements As a reminder, masking protocols will be in place throughout the school district, regardless of vaccination status. Specifically, masks/face coverings will be required indoors and outdoors during the school day, with the exception of lunch when masks can be removed while students are eating and drinking. For more specific information, please refer to the Washington State Department of Health – Order of the Secretary of Health Amending Order 20-03, signed on August 19, 2021. https://www.doh.wa.gov/Portals/1/Documents/1600/coronavirus/Secretary_of_Health_Order_20-03_Statewide_Face_Coverings.pdf Contact Tracing When staff are notified of a positive case, a possible case, or are sick themselves, they must notify the school administrator or school nurse. The nurse will follow guidance from Public Health – Seattle & King County and has been trained to work through contract tracing in determining what actions should next be taken and what guidance should subsequently be provided. All positive cases are reported to Public Health – Seattle & King County. If a person in a classroom tests positive, the close contacts will be notified. The teacher will also be interviewed to determine if social distancing has been maintained. An additional determination will be made if there are students or staff who could be considered close contacts, per the Washington State Department of Health definition of individuals who were next to the positive individual for less than six feet, greater than 15 minutes, over a 24-hour period. Riverview also has a coordinator assigned at the Washington State Department of Health should we need additional guidance and/or support. Our nursing team will also be tracking any students missing school because of illness and will follow up with families to give guidance on when a student can return, based on Public Health – Seattle & King County recommendations. If the positive case is a student, the family will be contacted to get additional information. Once the information is collected, Public Health – Seattle & King County will be notified, and a determination will be made if the whole classroom should quarantine or just specific close contacts for a 14-day period. If there is a second case in the same classroom within a two-week period, it is likely the whole classroom would be required to quarantine. For updated information on contact tracing and other mitigation factors, please see the latest Department of Health guidance, by clicking the link below: https://www.doh.wa.gov/Portals/1/Documents/1600/coronavirus/820-105-K12Schools2021-2022.pdf Lunch/Meal Updates At our elementary school locations, plexiglass will be added to the lunchroom tables, creating independent eating spaces for our students. Delays in plexiglass availability have caused the district to phase-in plexiglass installation at the secondary level after the school year begins. Tents will be placed outside on campus at both Cedarcrest High School and Tolt Middle School, allowing additional spacing for students to eat their lunch during the school day.
