Emergency Operations Plan

The purpose of the Riverview School District Emergency Operations Plan is to identify and respond to emergencies that may occur on school grounds while children are present. The plan outlines an approach to emergency management operations in the event of a high impact incident that requires immediate action when traditional resources are en route, limited or nonexistent.

Emergency Operations Field Guide

The Emergency Operations Plan is an associated document, which details specific procedures and guidelines for responding to an emergency.

WEATHER RELATED SCHEDULE CHANGES

PLEASE NOTE THAT RIVERVIEW SCHOOLS ARE ASSUMED TO BE IN SESSION, UNLESS A MESSAGE IS BROADCAST VIA TEXT, RADIO, TELEVISION, DISTRICT WEBSITE, AND/OR SOCIAL MEDIA

CONDITIONS

Situations involving snow, ice, power outages, windstorms, and floods are continually assessed and may make it necessary to temporarily alter the operation of school schedules and/or school buses in the Riverview School District.

CHANGES IN SCHOOL OPERATIONS

Changes in school operation schedules may be necessary, resulting in the closure of one or more schools for the day, a late start time, or an early dismissal time.

If it becomes necessary to dismiss students early because of inclement weather conditions or a widespread utility outage during the school day, notice of school changes will be distributed to radio and television stations, SchoolMessenger text alert subscribers, the District’s website, district email (Constant Contact), and social media outlets (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter).

If a school is closed, all after school activities are presumed to be cancelled, unless otherwise notified.

EMERGENCY OPERATIONS MESSAGING

Messages will be broadcast via Seattle-area radio and television stations, through the Riverview School District website, and Riverview’s social media pages on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

SCHOOLMESSENGER TEXT ALERTS

SchoolMessenger Text Alerts are available for families, wanting instant notifications of school delays and closures via a text message sent to their mobile phone.

To receive text alerts from the Riverview School District, you must provide a current mobile phone number in our Skyward student information database.

Once your number is entered in Skyward, a text message, asking you to “Opt-In,” will be sent to your mobile phone within 24-48 hours.

Simply reply by texting back the letter “Y,” or the word “Yes,” and you will be subscribed and begin receiving text alerts when available.

FLASH ALERT

You can also sign up for automatic emails from FlashAlert.net. These emails are tied directly to the school closure and late start media broadcast system.

E-MAILS

If you are signed up to receive Constant Contact e-mail distributions from your school(s), you may receive further notification updates from your principal.

Additionally, you can subscribe to Constant Contact email distributions by clicking the upper right-hand corner of our school websites and choosing “Join our E-mail list,” or by subscribing to District News on the Riverview School District website. District News subscribers receive an e-mail notification anytime a new post is made on the district website.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

If, at any time, you cannot determine what the district’s operations plans are, call the Transportation Information Hotline at (425) 844-4542.

Please do not call the schools, the school district office, or radio or television stations for school or bus operations information.

MESSAGING

Messages provided by the district will be brief in nature when shared with the public. Examples include:

“SCHOOLS CLOSED”

All schools in the district are closed for the day. All meetings, field trips and after school activities will also be cancelled. No out-of-district transportation will be provided. No Extended Day services will be provided.

“SCHOOL IS (ONE OR) TWO HOURS LATE, LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION”

Schools will be either one- or two-hours late start. Students will be dismissed at regular time, unless announced otherwise. Parents should reference media outlets identified above for further announcements. Buses will operate on Limited Bus Transportation Routes, if announced.

For two-hour late starts, Encompass and Preschool programs will be cancelled. There will be no breakfast served to students on these days. Morning Extended Day services will not be provided.

For one-hour late starts, Encompass and Preschool programs will start one hour late, except on Early Release Fridays when there will be no classes for these specific programs and classes. Breakfast will be served to students on these days.

“NO OUT-OF-DISTRICT TRANSPORTATION”

Schools are operating, but no school district transportation vehicles (buses, vans, cars) will operate outside of school boundaries in the A.M. This will include special education, field trips, after school activities, sports, events, concerts, performances, etc. The district will evaluate road conditions throughout the day and any P.M. transportation will be approved by the Superintendent or appropriate designee.

DELAYS INVOLVING “LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION”

Limited Bus Transportation Routes (a/k/a Snow Routes) will be implemented in the case of snowfall and/or other emergency occurrences which make it unsafe for buses to pick up students at all regularly identified bus stops. “Snow Routes” will be communicated through collaborative messaging from the Transportation Department, Communications Office, and district office administration.

NOTE REGARDING EXTENDED DAY SERVICES ON CLOSURES OR DELAYS

If school is opening with a delayed start, morning extended day services will not be provided. Likewise, if school is cancelled for the day, there will be no extended day services provided.

If Riverview closes school early, students must follow the Emergency Plan on file with the school office. All students must leave the school building and after-school extended day services will not be provided for the safety of the students and staff of the respective school.
