- A Statement from Riverview School District Regarding the Uvalde, Texas Tragedy
As we continue to process the senseless tragedy from yesterday in Uvalde, Texas, at Robb Elementary School, we grieve with those who have suffered immeasurable loss. The school shooting that occurred yesterday has become an all-too common story, with many people again shaken at such upsetting and heartbreaking news. The Uvalde tragedy will be discussed, shared about, and posted about in the days and weeks to come. We recognize that students will hear this news and have questions, and perhaps feel anxiety, be worried, or even fearful in coming to school. Some of this may be enhanced by social media and exposure to local and national news. Riverview School District would like to share some resources that may help parents and families have those important conversations with their children. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has published a tip sheet and infographic, “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers.” These are available for downloading, by clicking the links below: “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers” “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers Infographic” In Riverview, we have focused our efforts on prioritizing the safety of all our students and staff. Current and ongoing steps taken include: Staffing of an SSO (School Safety Officer), who oversees Carnation Elementary, Stillwater Elementary, and Riverview Learning Center; an additional SSO, dedicated to Tolt Middle School; an SRO (School Resource Officer) overseeing Cedarcrest High School and Eagle Rock Multi-Age School; and coverage from Duvall Police Department at Cherry Valley Elementary. Continuing, ongoing partnerships with Duvall Police Department, the King County Sheriff’s Office, Duvall Fire, Eastside Fire and Rescue, both cities, and additional volunteer organizations and groups dedicated to community safety. The district’s Emergency Management Committee meets semiannually, while each school’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) sub-committee meets regularly. Renewed contracts with Larch Counseling and Unified Counseling, providing ongoing mental health supports for students who may need external counseling services. Internal promotion of access and availability of Canopy, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for staff members. Implementation of ALICE Training for administrators, staff, and students in all schools, and hosting of community information nights for families. Here are additional resources for parents and families, which may prove helpful: How to Talk About School Shootings (Common Sense Media) Talking to Kids About Tragedies (National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement) How to Talk to Children About Shootings: An Age-by-Age Guide (Today.com) Students are encouraged to contact their school counselor, principal, or any trusted adult, should they need a place to turn for additional help. Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to work together, as a community, in keeping our schools safe places for learning.

- Tolt Bears New Logos Revealed!
Click the image above to view the Tolt Bears Logos Reveal video! Following morning announcements to students and staff on Friday, May 13, 2022, and a notification sent to Tolt families that same morning, Riverview School District is excited to present to you the new Tolt Middle School Bears logos! This fall, after the passage of House Bill 1356, Tolt put together a TMS Mascot Committee, including students, staff, and parents, to change the existing “Thunderbird” name, logo, and image. Tolt students ultimately voted to make the Tolt Bears the new school mascot. Following this announcement, Spellbrand, a professional design company that specializes in school branding, was hired tocreate a unique bear mascot, a primary logo, and several secondary logos. As Tolt principal, Amie Karkainen, stated in her correspondence to families this morning: “We are thrilled with the results and excited to share them with you!” Tolt Bears logos were revealed to students when they watched the reveal video, following morning announcements, in their first period classes. We now share that video with our entire Riverview Community! You will begin seeing Tolt Bears logos immediately, as we will be implementing them moving forward and transitioning from previous imagery to these new designs. Please check out the Tolt Bears Logos Reveal video and thanks to everyone who participated in this process. We could not be happier with the results!

- Tolt Teachers Share in an Incredible Learning Experience
Photos courtesy of Mark Klune and Tolt Middle School staff. On April 27-29, 2022, nine Tolt Middle School teachers participated in a unique and intensive professional learning experience with Dr. Adeyemi Stembridge, through a partnership with the Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP). Middle school teachers, from the areas of language arts, social studies, and science, received coaching, facilitation, and technical assistance in the areas of providing culturally responsive education in the classroom. Schools in our state had the chance to apply to CSTP for this residency opportunity and Riverview’s Teaching and Learning Department was approved to host Dr. Stembridge, following an application process led by Riverview Professional Learning Leader Mark Klune. Over three days of learning, Dr. Stembridge shared how culturally responsive education applies within a classroom setting. In this instance, teachers applied these practices by teaching a lesson to sixth grade students on genetics. Based on six themes (rigor, engagement, cultural identity, relationships, vulnerability, and assets), Tolt teachers learned how to understand, validate, and care more deeply about students as they plan lessons. The teachers learned how to build lessons around a state standard, attach increased rigor, and best increase the amount of strategic thinking and extended thinking for students. The nine teachers will be using these planning strategies during their teacher collaboration days. When planning a lesson, teachers learned to keep these five questions in mind: What do I want students to understand? What do I want students to feel? What are the targets for rigor? What are the indicators for engagement? What are the opportunities to be responsive? Research indicates that lessons designed with these questions in mind prove to be more inclusive and engaging for learners. Teachers were able to implement these strategies first-hand as they designed and taught a lesson on genetics to a sixth grade science classroom. Students were able to connect with the lesson’s materials in a meaningful manner and learn about key scientific principles in a new way. One teacher shared that, “Though we all respected each other before, it now feels like we are all on the same page and have a shared mission. Aside from the actual content learning, the biggest takeaway for me was feeling like I was at a school where I belonged, with this group of teachers. I am lucky to work in a place that values this learning.” “I have participated in a lot of amazing professional development over 22 years of teaching, and this, by far, is one of the most valuable sessions I have ever been a part of,” shared an additional participant. “There is the potential for some incredible change with this learning for all of us.” We thank Dr. Stembridge, our Teaching and Learning Department, and CSTP for bringing such powerful and engaging learning to our staff at Tolt Middle School. We are excited to see the positive impacts these efforts will have on student learning.
- Riverview Named PEI’s 2022 FieldSTEM District of the Year!
Each year, the Pacific Education Institute (PEI) recognizes individuals that support their organization’s mission to advance scientific literacy by promoting equitable, outdoor, locally relevant, integrated, career-connected, real-world science. We are thrilled to share that Riverview School District has been named PEI’s 2022 FieldSTEM District of the Year! Riverview joins Thorp School District (2021) and Puyallup School District (2020) as recent recipients of this award. Riverview’s K-5 Science Facilitator, Tiffany Ingham, and K-5 Science Program Assistant, Lyn Isaacson, will be recognized at an upcoming awards ceremony in September for their work with PEI and FieldSTEM. FieldSTEM is a program designed to help classroom teachers, schools and school districts implement equitable environmental and sustainability education. This engages students, educators, administrators, and community collaborators in building scientifically literate learners prepared to make balanced decisions for sustainable communities. These projects also help prepare students for the Washington science, math, and ELA (English Language Arts) assessments. FieldSTEM further supports students in the development of critical thinking and civic-minded engagement in the social sciences – subjects not formally assessed by the State of Washington. “This work has really been a team effort, one that would not have gained ground without district-wide support,” said Ingham. “Our work continues to make Riverview’s elementary science program full of opportunity for all our students.” Kristin Edlund, Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning, shared that, “This is a wonderful honor for Riverview and a direct reflection of Tiffany and Lyn’s vision and work in leveraging PEI’s FieldSTEM program to make our elementary science classes more successful and relevant.” To learn more about PEI and FieldSTEM, including a video which outlines the program in greater depth, please visit the link below: https://pacificeducationinstitute.org/work/fieldstem/#why-fieldstem-2
