- COVID-19: Riverview Updated Plan
As COVID cases continue to rise, we understand you may have questions about the district’s plan and the most current recommendations from public health agencies. Riverview continues to follow guidance from the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and Public Health - Seattle & King County (PHSKC). To see the latest guidance, please click below: Supplemental Considerations to Mitigate COVID-19 Transmission in K-12 Schools K-12 COVID-19 Requirements for Summer 2021 and the 2021-2022 School Year Our intent is to keep schools open while ensuring students and staff are safe. Mitigation strategies include the following: Masking Physical distancing Ventilation Frequent cleaning Contact tracing positive cases Successful implementation of Test to Stay program Increasing vaccination rates among students The guidance we receive from DOH and PHSKC advises us on next steps in the process, including if we need to consider closing a school, classroom, activity, or sport. If deemed necessary by public health agencies, our remote learning experience from last year provides us the knowledge and background to pivot any individual classrooms or schools temporarily. Updated procedures for those who have tested positive, experience symptoms, or have been identified as a close contact of a known COVID-19 case are as follows: All people with COVID-19 (with or without symptoms) need to isolate for at least 5 days. For students, teachers, and staff who test positive for COVID-19 and never develop symptoms: Isolate for at least 5 days. Day 0 is the day of the positive COVID-19 test and day 1 is the first full day after the specimen was collected for the positive test. If they continue to have no symptoms, they can end isolation after at least 5 days, but must continue to wear a mask for an additional 5 days. This applies to anyone with COVID-19, regardless of their vaccination status. If they develop symptoms after testing positive, the 5-day isolation period should start over. Day 0 is the first day of symptoms. For students teachers and staff who have COVID-19 and have or had symptoms: They can end isolation after 5 days if they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and other symptoms have improved. If the person meets these criteria, they can return to school after 5 days of isolation but must continue to wear a mask for an additional 5 days. This applies to anyone with COVID-19, regardless of their vaccination status. If they continue to have a fever or other symptoms have not improved after 5 days of isolation, they should wait to end isolation until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and other symptoms have improved. Close contacts of a known COVID-19 case at school, must follow current quarantine guidelines or modified quarantine based on the Test to Stay program outlined below. Test to Stay Eligibility: The DOH Test to Stay Program and associated modified quarantine applies to the following individuals (students or staff) in all school and non-school situations: Individuals between the ages of 5–17 years who have not completed a primary vaccination series. Individuals ages 18 or older who completed a primary series of recommended vaccine but have not received a recommended booster shot when eligible. Individuals who are not vaccinated or have not completed a primary vaccine series. Modified Quarantine Guidelines: Students may continue to attend class and participate in extracurricular activities (see below) in a modified quarantine status for 5 days after exposure (the date of last close contact is considered day 0), if they: Are tested at least twice during the 5 days of quarantine; AND Are symptom free; AND Continue to wear a well-fitting mask when around others; AND Continue to quarantine from (i.e., not participate in) all social gatherings and community activities. They may participate in extracurricular activities at school, including sports, and can attend childcare or youth development programs provided before and after school. Staff may continue to work in a modified quarantine status for 5 days after exposure (the date of last close contact is considered day 0), if they: Are tested at least twice during the 5 days of quarantine; AND Are symptom free; AND Continue to wear a well-fitting mask when around others; AND Continue to quarantine from (i.e., not participate in) all social gatherings and community activities. Close contacts who choose to not participate in Riverview’s Test to Stay Program If an individual or student who is a close contact chooses not to test or does not get tested: 10-day Quarantine: Quarantine should last for 10 days after the last close contact. However, if any COVID-19 symptoms develop during the 10 days, the individual should isolate and get tested. Riverview’s commitment to students and families remains steadfast. After just one week of participation in the Test to Stay program, Riverview is thrilled to announce that this program has enabled approximately 130 students to remain in the classroom. These are students who, without the program, would previously have been home for 10 days. Thank you for your continued support and we will continue to provide updates should guidance change.
- A Special Message to the Riverview Community from Superintendent, Dr. Anthony L. Smith
Following this evening's Riverview School District School Board of Directors Meeting, our Superintendent, Dr. Anthony L. Smith, has prepared a message to share with our Riverview Community. January 11, 2022 Dear Riverview Students, Staff, Families, and Community, The purpose of this communication is to inform you that I will be retiring at the end of the current school year. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the students, staff, families, and community in Riverview for 28 of my 39 years in public education, beginning my career as a teacher, and then serving in Riverview as a counselor, principal, director, assistant superintendent, and most recently, as superintendent. During the past twenty years, we have all worked together collaboratively, to prepare our students for their futures. That time span has been characterized by many accomplishments, some of which follow: A highly involved, responsive, and caring school board that has received state recognition from independent evaluators as a “Washington Board of Distinction” the past eight years in a row. The school board has consistently prioritized student voice and community participation in decisions. We were among the first school districts in the state of Washington to add student representatives to the school board, 17 years ago. Extended graduation rates approaching 100%. Commitment to low class sizes to best meet each student’s needs. Consistent passage of levies to support our students. Thank you! Increase of opportunities in the “4 A’s,” Academics, Activities, Athletics, and the Arts. Highly qualified staff that are provided continual professional learning opportunities. High university, college, technical school, and apprenticeship placement rates. We are making incredible progress toward meeting our goal of having every student graduate with progress toward recognized certification, whether it be college credit, industry certification, technical certification, or other certification. Investment in district technologies, ranging from an enhanced fiber optic network infrastructure to placing personal devices in the hands of every student and staff member, further supporting ongoing student learning. State and national level recognition for excellence of student outcomes, including one of the few districts nationally to achieve the prodigious Advanced Placement (AP) College Board Award for five consecutive years. The AP District Honor Roll recognizes school districts committed to increasing access to AP for underrepresented students while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Committing to an equity and access plan, beginning in 2016, with a specific policy adopted in August of 2021. Exponential increase in community, regional, state, and national partnerships to provide additional opportunities that support our students, staff, families, and the community. Substantial increase in scholarship opportunities for our students. Establishment of an ongoing Emergency Management Committee that meets regularly and includes government officials, first responders, district staff, and community health and safety organizations. Accountable strategic plan that is measurable, where every task is reported on publicly. Consistent staff retention over time to achieve our goals. Significantly expanded student and family direct services in many areas. Examples include counseling, nursing, multilanguage learner and special education services, music, physical education, library, and other specialist areas. Contracting with Larch and Unified Counseling services so students and families in need have local access. This has had far reaching results for access to human services throughout our community, with a focus on those that may not have the means to access intensive mental health supports. Capital facility improvements such as adding additional classrooms to our school buildings and additional athletic facilities for increased student and community use. Building of the Riverview Learning Center to house our K-12 parent partnership program (PARADE), and on campus and virtual programs, such as CLIP, CHOICE, CLEAR, and Edgenuity. Purchase of a total of 68 acres of land at two locations for future school building site needs over the next 100 years, saving taxpayers millions of dollars in the process. Responsible budget management that provided adequate yearly fund balances to sustain educational programs over time. I would like to thank all those I have served with, especially current and former students and staff, that taught me so much, from the boardroom to the classroom and beyond. Announcing this decision now will provide ample time to select a highly qualified replacement. The Riverview School Board will be sharing information regarding the search process for selecting the next superintendent in the coming weeks. My personal mission has always been to empower people to reach their full potential – to strive for excellence, and to be part of something greater than myself. Living, working, and contributing to the Riverview Community has allowed me to achieve my mission. Thanks for all each of you has done to support our students, staff, families, and the community! With grace, gratitude, and hope, Dr. Anthony L. Smith Superintendent Riverview School District

- A Statement from Riverview School District Regarding Recent TikTok Trends and Concerns
Riverview School District has become aware of a troubling post that has been shared widely this week on the social media platform TikTok. The post refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” on Friday, December 17, 2021. The post is part of a national TikTok trend and did not originate in our school district. We have heard reports from other districts that the same post is circulating in schools nationally. While we do not anticipate any issues tomorrow, we are closely monitoring the situation and taking it seriously. Additionally, the district has been in contact with local police and first responders regarding the post. We may have an increased police presence in our buildings on Friday as an added precaution. This situation serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible, threats cause severe emotional distress to students, school staff, parents, and communities. We ask our families to monitor their student’s social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online. Issuing a threat, posted anywhere in the building, over a social media platform, in a text message or e-mail, is a federal crime (threatening interstate communications). Those who post or send these threats can receive up to five years in federal prison, or they can face state or local charges. In addition, posts or threats of this kind can also result in school-level consequences. If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member or trusted adult immediately. Thank you for your partnership as we work to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for all our students.

- Interpreter Training Opportunities with PSESD to Support Riverview Students and Families
The Riverview School District is in need of interpreters to support our students and families. We are pleased to share that Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD) Multilingual Services will be offering fall trainings for interpreters on December 6 and December 9, 2021. This four-hour virtual training will prepare participants to serve as professional interpreters in an educational setting. The PSESD training covers the fundamentals of professional interpreting, provides opportunities to practice in this role, and offers resources such as a code of ethics, tips on professionalism, and information about how to become certified as an interpreter (this course does not certify interpreters). PSESD has designed this course to support those currently practicing as interpreters and those new to the role. The training is designed to be interactive, leveraging the experiences of those participating. Interested parties can participate in the morning (from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.) or in the afternoon/evening (from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.) on the dates highlighted above. For those interested in working as an interpreter with the Riverview School District, we require an Independent Contractor form and completed W-9 forms as part of the application process. Completed applications are reviewed prior to being approved by the School Board. Once the application has been approved, interpreters are then placed on our list of approved contractors, from which the schools and programs hire from. This cost to register is $25 per person. For those interested in signing up for a training on one of the days listed above, please either reply to this email message or contact Dr. Randy Stocker, Assistant Superintendent, Teaching and Learning (stockerr@rsd407.org) and a registration link will be provided.
