  • Tolt Middle School Announces New Mascot!

On the morning of November 23, 2021, Tolt Middle School made a historic announcement to students and staff during the daily morning announcements. Following the passage of HB 1356, Tolt Middle School formed a Tolt Mascot Committee, consisting of students, staff, and parents, who worked together to decide on options for a new animal mascot. The final two selections, Bears and Coyotes, were provided to Tolt students to vote on this past Friday. Riverview School District joins Tolt Middle School in sharing the exciting news that students have selected Tolt Bears as their new official mascot! Ms. Karkainen's email message to Tolt students, staff, and parents is provided below: Dear Tolt Families, Earlier this fall, it was announced that based on the passage of House Bill 1356, Tolt Middle School was required to change the “Thunderbird” name, logo, and image. Our school put together a Tolt Mascot Committee that included students, staff, and parents to lead the process to determine a new animal mascot. Students and staff had the opportunity to make mascot suggestions to this committee. Last Wednesday, it was announced that the Tolt Mascot Committee selected two animals they believed would both be excellent mascots for our school - the Bears and the Coyotes. Last Friday, students voted for either the Bears or the Coyotes. Yesterday, the vote was verified to ensure its accuracy. During this morning’s announcements, I shared that the mascot that received the most votes, and therefore our new mascot is…the Tolt Bears! Bears are an excellent representation of our school community, both in the classroom and in sports competitions. Bears exude power and strength, are fierce, brave, resilient, intelligent, protective of their cubs, and live in our valley. Our next step is to create a new school logo with a bear image. Once this logo is created, we will start to turn our campus into Bear Country! Thank you to all involved in the process to select the Bears as our new mascot. Go Tolt Bears! Amie Karkainen, Principal

  • An Update from RSD Food Services - November 17, 2021

Supply Chain Issues & School Meals - What Parents Need to Know courtesy of School Nutrition Association At Riverview School District, we know the importance of school meals in fueling both healthy minds and bodies. Even though school meals may look a little different during the 2021-2022 school year, please know that your Food Services team is working hard to ensure students have safe, nutritious, and appealing meals. Today, I am writing to share how Riverview is working to overcome food supply and labor challenges related to the COVID-19 public health emergency, so that students continue to receive school meals. At times, we may not receive expected food orders due to labor shortages (such as delivery drivers) and limited product availability (for example, discontinued products or not enough of a specific type of product). As a result, our Food Services team may need to make last-minute changes to the menu or substitute a different brand of food product. We know that students have favorite menu items and are working hard to provide them whenever possible. We are also thinking ahead to identify alternative food items that are nutritious and appealing for our students. If your student has food allergies or a special dietary need, be assured that meeting these needs and keeping your student safe remains a priority for us. We will continue to provide meal modifications if your student requires a meal modification. To request a meal modification, please contact your school’s nurse who can help facilitate those arrangements: Kristin Uselman Carnation Elementary, Riverview Learning Center uselmank@rsd407.org (425) 844-4596 Candice Karp Cedarcrest High School, Eagle Rock Multi-Age karpc@rsd407.org (425) 844-4878 Michelle Wells Cherry Valley Elementary wellsm@rsd407.org (425) 844-4794 Cortney Nachreiner Stillwater Elementary nachreinerc@rsd407.org (425) 844-4698 Rachel Tomczek Tolt Middle School tomczekr@rsd407.org (425) 844-4662 If you have questions or concerns regarding how your student’s food allergies or dietary needs will be managed during these supply chain shortages, please contact Robin Budig, Program Assistant, via email at budigr@rsd407.org. Regarding the "Con" committee, if you would like the district to consider you for appointment to this committee and write a statement in opposition to the levy propositions, please email your name, mailing address, phone number, email address, and a brief statement of interest for consideration to Stacy Cook via email at cooks@rsd407.org, no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2021. • A Statement from the Riverview School Board of Directors - November 5, 2021

The Riverview School Board of Directors continues to work directly with district personnel to address the issue of racism; overt and hidden, individual, and institutional. Riverview strives to be a place of equity and inclusion. We are committed to providing a culture of equity, access, recognition, and belonging for all students. We also acknowledge that there is more work to be done. Schools have a profound influence in shaping the future of our society. Public schools alone, however, cannot produce the societal changes that are desperately needed to protect our students from social injustice. As a community, we must collaboratively do our part to serve each and every student responsibly. We are firmly committed to advocating for all students, standing up for justice, closing the cultural divide, and further understanding the needs of our marginalized communities. On August 10, 2021, the School Board of Directors adopted Policy 3001 – “Equity and Access for All Students.” As this is a new policy, the Superintendent or designee is responsible for developing procedures to implement this policy, including an action plan. These words are only a starting point. We can and must do better in our community and persist in making this current commitment to do so a permanent one. The Riverview School District School Board of Directors Lori Oviatt, Sabrina Parnell, Carol Van Noy, Danny Edwards, and Jodi Fletcher

  • Important Information from Riverview School District - November 3, 2021

Dear Riverview Community: Cedarcrest High School and the Riverview School District have been made aware of a social media post, which involved students attending a private, non-school district event, and posting an image that is insensitive, extremely inappropriate, and disappointing. The social media post occurred off-campus and outside of school hours. We have received numerous emails, phone calls, and notifications regarding this image. Further, Cedarcrest High School has allowed students affected by this image the opportunity to speak to staff about the emotions and feelings that this image has caused. Cedarcrest High School and Riverview School District do not condone the messages shared by the post. The Riverview School District and Cedarcrest High School hold shared values of honesty, inclusiveness, integrity and engagement. We are committed to ensuring that all students and staff are treated equally and feel safe and welcome when coming to school each day. We will continue to allow opportunities for students to discuss their thoughts and emotions. We have been in contact with those involved and will continue to address concerns shared with us. Our school is a community, and we remain committed to our shared values as a district, school, and community.

  • Tolt's New Administrators Discuss New Roles in the 2021-2022 School Year

As students return to full-time, in-person learning, we have settled into what a “current normal” looks like - masks, physical distancing, lunch under canopies outside. This school year also brings new leadership at Tolt Middle School, adjusting and working with the changes and challenges of what education looks like in an ongoing pandemic. Karen Maguigad joins the Tolt administrative team as Assistant Principal, while Theresa Vander Vaart moves into the role as Tolt’s new Dean of Students. Together, they are committed to helping build a culture of personalized learning, inclusiveness, and acceptance, while working to ensure the Tolt community of students, families, and staff remain focused on a common goal of success for each and every student. Maguigad’s transition to Tolt and Riverview School District comes, most recently, by way of Eisenhower Middle School in Everett. Vander Vaart, an Administrative Intern pursuing her Residency Principal Administrator certificate and completing her Master of Education, moves from Tolt’s English Language Arts team into her new role. Though both are passionate about their work in education and the differences they make each day for students, Maguigad and Vander Vaart have walked somewhat different paths leading to their roles in school administration. “I am the only educator in my family,” shares Maguigad. “I always liked being a student, always liked school. English was my favorite subject, but I thought I might become a counselor or a therapist. Then, during a break from school I started envisioning myself as a teacher, and thought, ‘this seems like it fits’.” For Vander Vaart, she knew education was something she would pursue at a relatively young age. “I decided, probably in sixth grade, that I was going to be a teacher. I have quite a few educators in my family – both my parents were public school teachers, same with aunts, uncles, cousins – I spent a lot of time growing up in schools and that really solidified that I wanted to be an educator as well. It just made sense.” As educators in the classroom, Maguigad and Vander Vaart could see the direct impact they had on students. They saw bigger opportunities in making positive impacts in school culture and creating safe spaces for students to learn effectively. “As a department chair at Issaquah High School, I started to see education in a different way,” says Maguigad. “I got involved in building leadership and I wanted to be able to affect more than just the kids in the classroom at that point. If I can impact and work with teachers, then I am impacting more than just my kids. Kids can have that strong teacher and develop a deeper love of learning.” “I love the classroom and the energy we create with students,” Vander Vaart adds. “It is fun being able to be around them and work with them and get to hear their perspectives. In the last few years though there’s been this little whisper – ‘What else can you do outside of your classroom? How can you collaborate with teachers to make a better school environment? How can you work with students to have their voices be heard, not just in your classroom but throughout a school or school system’.” As the new Assistant Principal and Dean of Students, Maguigad and Vander Vaart welcome the new opportunities awaiting them. Each has experience in supporting students in social-emotional learning and are skilled in PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions Support) implementation. Maguigad served as a Dean of Students from 2015-17 in the Issaquah School District, prior to her work at Eisenhower Middle School. At Riverview, there is a more personal, one-on-one approach that is sometimes missed within a larger district. “I am super excited to have the chance to work with Theresa as our Dean of Students because I think that collaboration in having a support role is so huge. I started in a rural community (Pasco), and although it was a bigger population and district, they still had just one high school where there was a small-town feel to it. I am reminded a bit of my experience there in coming to Riverview, but Everett and Issaquah were much different. Everything there was ‘system-driven,’ and this district allows for more personal connection. You can avoid the risk of getting lost in the shuffle.” Vander Vaart adds: “Tolt has progressively been shifting in a more positive way. To be able to help facilitate those conversations and involve students in discussions around what kind of school they want and having them share what kind of place they want school to be, is very important. Being brave enough to acknowledge that sometimes we make mistakes, and we are all learning together is a big piece of the learning process. Having those conversations with students and adults and asking the questions about what’s working well and what may need to be shifted makes things work better.” Please join us in welcoming Karen Maguigad and Theresa Vander Vaart into their new roles as Tolt’s Assistant Principal and Dean of Students.

This directive also extends to our substitute pool. The following requirements are currently in place to serve as a substitute in Riverview School District: If you have a bachelor’s degree, you can substitute as a teacher in a classroom. Please join us in congratulating Greig Hicks and Todd Russell on receiving these incredible and prestigious honors.

  • Updates from Riverview School District - October 8, 2021

LATEST GUIDANCE FROM WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH Earlier this week, the Riverview School District nursing team prepared an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for students and families to have available through the Riverview School District website. The FAQ provides common answers and responses to questions our nurses have been receiving since the return of full-time, in-person learning in September. This week, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) released further updates for COVID-19 requirements for K-12 schools. This includes new "COVID-19 Decision Trees," which provide guidance for families and school staff on the steps to take should a person appear symptomatic at school, as well as underlining the steps involved in identifying and caring for those deemed "Close Contacts" to a potential case of COVID-19. Currently, King County has not authorized school districts to utilize a "Test-to-Stay" protocol. Riverview, like additional school districts in the region, are in contact with and working with Public Health - Seattle King County to finalize approval of a "Test-to-Stay" option for students. The district website (linked above) has been updated to provide this latest information, including links for the new "Decision Trees." A significant change in this latest guidance involves what to do should someone exhibit symptoms common with COVID-19 exposure. There are now two categories for those appearing symptomatic: CATEGORY 1 - A person experiencing these symptoms should isolate at home AND get tested for COVID-19. They can return to school after providing a negative COVID-19 test, if they have had no fever within the past 24 hours (without medication) AND symptoms have significantly improved: · Fever (100.4°F) or chills · Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing · Muscle or body aches · New loss of taste or smell CATEGORY 2 - A person experiencing these symptoms should isolate at home; however, they can return to school without a COVID-19 test if they only had one symptom, the symptom resolved within 24 hours, AND they were not a known close contact to someone who tested positive for COVID-19: · Congestion or runny nose · Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea · Cough (new, changed, or worsening) · Headache · Fatigue · Sore throat At all times, staying in contact with your school nurse is the best way to ensure students and staff members are kept as safe and healthy as possible. Should you or your child(ren) find themselves in a Category 1 or Category 2 situation, please send all questions to your school nurse at your very earliest opportunity. We continue to follow the guidance of our local health experts and remind everyone that guidance can change at any given time. We thank everyone in our Riverview Community for continued support and partnership as we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic together. EMPOWER YOUTH NETWORK "BE A MENTOR" PROGRAM With volunteers now permitted to return to our classrooms and buildings (see below), the Riverview School District is excited to again partner with Empower Youth Network and encourage community members to "Be A Mentor" and participate in the Empower Youth Network's youth mentoring program. Empower Youth Network offers a one-to-one volunteer mentoring program called the Youth Success! Mentoring (YSM) program, that supports Riverview students. This program matches adult volunteers with students of all ages who could benefit from extra support, through a consistent weekly meeting during the school day. Mentor relationships have the potential to provide crucial support and positive guidance to help students grow and develop. See more benefits in their flyer below. Anyone who has a desire to help a child – to show a child that they matter as an individual and that they are not alone in their day-to-day challenges – is encouraged to apply to become a mentor. Mentors meet once a week with the same student for about an hour. YSM provides mentor training and activity ideas that the matched pair can do together. Weekly connections between mentors and student are taking place in person at schools and a few via video conferencing calls facilitated by Empower Youth Network. Whether online or in person, the program wil continue to offer students a healthy weekly connection with their mentor. If you’re interested in mentoring a Riverview student this 2021-22 school year, please visit the Empower Youth Network website to learn more about Youth Success! Mentoring and email: BeAMentor@EmpowerYouthNetwork.org. VOLUNTEERS UPDATE Effective October 18, 2021, all volunteers must have an up-to-date, completed, and approved volunteer application, proof of vaccination, or approved medical or religious exemption, on file with Riverview School District. Volunteers for classrooms and other indoor activities will be allowed beginning Monday, October 4, 2021. If you are interested in volunteering in Riverview, you will need to gain approval from the classroom teacher and building administrator. Volunteer applications are available at the Riverview ESC in Duvall or by clicking the link below. https://riverviewvolunteers.myschooldata.net/ #SHARINGSUNDAY RETURNS OCTOBER 10, 2021 The weekly #SharingSunday social media event returns, beginning October 10, 2021, with all new posts on the district's Facebook page. Since first launching in January 2019, #SharingSunday has earned both regional and national award recognition, while capturing an array of stories from the clubs, activities, and classroom interactions our students and staff engage in on a daily and weekly basis. Images, stories, links to community events, and other Riverview-connected stories and information of interest are included. As many as 10 stories will be featured each Sunday, with posts releasing every 10-15 minutes or so, until we work through the stack of stories for a given week. If you have a story or information you would like to be considered for an upcoming #SharingSunday, email the Riverview School District Communications Office at communications@rsd407.org. Please include your contact information, should our Communications Office need to follow up with any additional questions. The purpose of this communication is to provide a link to the recent Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Bulletin advising families to consider providing income information for the current school year, share updates from our Teaching and Learning Department, provide a digital copy of The Riverview Way, connect you to the latest COVID-19 Data Dashboard information, and pass along a couple quick reminders of requirements for volunteers beginning next week. FAMILIES ENCOURAGED TO RETURN INCOME INFORMATION FOR 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR Recently, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) shared details on the importance of families returning income information and school meal applications, though meals remain free for students during the 2021-2022 school year. Information collected in school meal applications and family income surveys help students access district or community reduced fee benefits. In addition, the information may be used to qualify eligible children for school year 2021-2022, and summer 2022 P-EBT (Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer), if programs are extended. Completing these forms is simple and confidential. There are no citizenship requirements for participation in federal Child Nutrition Programs, and immigration status is not requested or disclosed. Information obtained from family income forms is used to determine student eligibility for several school programs. In addition, the information can help increase funding for before and after school academic programs, guidance and college counselors, fee waivers for college applications and admissions tests, as well has help provide healthy and nutritious meals. Our most recent selection includes Illustrative Math for Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2, currently being field-tested at Tolt Middle School and Cedarcrest High School. We officially adopted San Francisco Unified School District Math for our elementary math program. These selections align with our adopted grade 6-8 Illustrative Math curriculum. Our middle and high school Social Studies departments are documenting, developing, and field-testing curriculum resources as they move towards updating the current offerings. We are implementing an increased focus on research-based reading strategies through the adoption of phonics instructional materials and staff professional development on the materials. These curriculum materials and instructional practices focus on rigorous problem solving, sense making, fluency, and understanding which will help our students meet Riverview Outcomes. K-8 Virtual Program Updates Students participating in the Edgenuity/PSESD K-8 Virtual Alternative are progressing through the program after some initial start-up in learning about the platform, instructional methods, and curriculum. The curriculum is aligned to Washington State Learning Standards and the instructional delivery is adapted for a self-paced online learning environment. Students have signed up for the semester and if there are any changes to their needs or questions about program, please contact us via email at Riverview Teaching and Learning. THE RIVERVIEW WAY Redesigned for the 2021-2022 school year, The Riverview Way communicates our priorities and how they work together, to build upon student-centered culture in our school district.
