The Secret Garden at Cherry Valley Elementary School is thriving, thanks to the generosity of community members, dedicated volunteers and grants from the Riverview Education Foundation (REF) and Cherry Valley Parent Teacher Association (CVPTA).
Open to students during recess one day a week, the garden offers a unique outdoor learning experience where students can get their hands dirty, explore nature and discover the rewards of growing their own food.
With support from staff and volunteers, students have been busy tending an impressive pumpkin patch, weeding newly installed garden beds and watering recently planted potatoes and garlic. They've also been harvesting sunflower seeds, kale, arugula and strawberry starts, with fresh produce making its way home for families to enjoy.
One of the garden's recent highlights was the harvest of 29 pumpkins, enough for every classroom to decorate its own pumpkin and display it along the school's cafeteria windows.
Beyond growing vegetables and flowers, the Secret Garden provides students with an alternative recess experience that encourages teamwork, responsibility and an appreciation for the natural world.
The garden's success reflects the collective efforts of families, community donors, volunteers and school staff who have contributed their time, resources and enthusiasm.
With another planting season approaching, the garden crew is excited to continue expanding opportunities for students to learn, explore and grow.
Cherry Valley Elementary would like to extend a special thank-you to everyone who has donated supplies, funding or time to make the Secret Garden a place where Cherry Valley students can grow.
