Riverview School District's new fifth-grade Elementary Band Program is off to a strong start, with students learning to play instruments, developing musical skills and discovering the value of making music together.
Just two months into the school year, students are already making steady progress. Through a combination of classroom instruction, at-home practice logs and online video lessons, fifth-graders are learning the fundamentals of playing an instrument, from proper posture and producing their first notes to mastering fingerings, rhythms and dynamics.
Students are also beginning to recognize notes on a musical staff, building a foundation for continued growth throughout the school year.
Beyond learning music, the program is helping students develop important life skills. Patience, kindness and teamwork are becoming part of the classroom experience as students support classmates who need extra help and emerging leaders assist others in their sections.
Students are also learning how breathing techniques can improve musical performance while helping them manage their energy and emotions. Bringing instruments and music books between home and school each Friday is reinforcing responsibility and organizational skills.
Families recently had an opportunity to visit band classrooms during Elementary Curriculum Nights, connecting with instructors and getting a firsthand look at the program.
Community support has also played an important role in the program's successful launch. Families and local supporters have contributed to its development, while a grant from the Riverview Education Foundation (REF) has provided funding to purchase instruments that will serve students for years to come.
The program's first major milestone is approaching. Fifth-grade musicians will make their concert debut at the:
Riverview School District All-District Music Festival at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Cedarcrest High School.
They will join band and choir students from across the district.
The event will give families and community members an opportunity to celebrate the progress of Riverview's young musicians and the continued growth of music education throughout the district.
