Dr. Smith started his career in the South Whidbey School District where his main teaching assignment was middle school and high school band. His involvement outside the classroom included coaching multiple sports, Activity Advisor for the Interhigh Student Leadership Program, and serving as both High School Arts Department Chair and Instructional Cabinet Chair.
When asked what he is most proud of during his 25 years in the Riverview School District, Dr. Smith stated the following:
"What makes me most proud is our collaborative, community, and family-oriented culture that believes in high expectations yet does not let go of kids. All students get served to a high level in our district through our wide variety of educational options. One focused effort we began 18 years ago, was exponential expansion of our AP and Honors programs coupled with a moral imperative for student equity and access across the board. Riverview became one of three school districts in North America to make the College Board’s AP Honor Roll five years in a row for “expanding opportunity and improving performance of AP students.” From 2012 to 2017, our on-time graduation rate improved from 87% to 97% and continues to be one of the best in the state."
In October 2020, Dr. Smith received the WSPRA (Washington School Public Relations Award) Crystal Apple Award, To learn more about Dr. Smith's recognition, please click here.
